I am trying to figure out what my preferences are when it comes to headphones. I found out that I like prefer my CALs more than my Beats Solo2 although the Beats' isolation is quite nice, but since I couldn't tell that it was bass heavy, do you guys have any idea why I like the CALs better?

I feel like I can hear or pick out more things from a song than I can with the beats.

That probably tell you more about the Beats then it does about the CAL - and not in a good way...

When a headphone dumps nearly all the sound into a fairly small frequency range, the sound will usually be boomy and all the bass notes will blend together. A better headphone will provide more definition to each note, allowing you to tell the difference between them.

You prefer to hear your music much closer the way the artist and audio engineers, etc. laid it down, mixed it and intended it to be heard.
