After being recommended to these headphones by a large amount of people I just went to amazon.ca and queued up an order for them, only to notice right before checking out that they said they were DISCONTINUED. These caught me completely by surprise because not only are there really easy to find everywhere, but people have been recommending them to me very recently. I know this probably isn't a big deal but I feel super suspicious right now and have no idea what's going on.

Here is the order I have queued up: http://www.amazon.ca/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B000ULAP4U

Here is another Amazon canada listing for seemingly the exact same pair of headphones: http://www.amazon.ca/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B007QKL7MW/ref=sr_1_2_m?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1425334128&sr=1-2&keywords=Audio-Technica+ATH-M5

What gives?

Yes. the M50 were discontinued for a while now.  There is a newer improved version called the M50x with better bass, better comfort and removable cable.  The M50 has been a highly recommended hp for years and now there's the M50x as the replacement.

Actually, they are still shown on the Audio-Technica website in several variations:

The M50 was made for a long time and the production numbers were huge. I would expect to see them on the open market for quite a while.

Oh okay. I went ahead and bought a pair off amazon, I've heard good things about them and don't feel like stepping up to the ath50x so I'm looking forward to it.

They are roughly the same headphone. Good things you heard about M50s are still apply to the M50x.  Which that said, if your turn out not liking the sound of M50 then M50x would not be for you as well.  Many people go for for the M50x just for the removable cable( coil cable is too heavy, straight cable is too long.. etc.. ). Many people go for M50 to save a few bucks that's a good idea too. I guess what I'm saying is "Potato vs Potato"
