Sometimes headphones can bring out imperfections in low quality recording.
What type of audio files do you use?

  I use MP3s

What type of Mp3s? 128K, 196K, 224k, 256k, 320K
Are these being played from a computer?
What DAC and amp are you using to drive the headphones?

The particular file I have a problem with is 256k from a computer.

Plugged straight into the headphone jack, no DAC/amp

What is the make and model of the headphones and the motherboard?

  Headphones Sony-MDRZX300

Motherboard (N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX)

The 24-Ohm Sony MDR-ZX300s are design to be driven off portable audio devices and your HP computer comes with low cost built in audio hardware, not the best for driving headphones.
Not surprised that your music does not sound it's best when played thru the headphones.

Get these two items and your music should improve
Gemini HSR-1000 closed headphones, $56.
Asus Xonar DG (PCI) sound card, $27
