I think its not fair to attribute SRH 440's with harsh treble but yes it took sometime for me to get used to its sound sig.and they are also not very forgiving with poorly recorded mp3s..so getting srh840s is a better.choice..

i notice you also own the HD555.
how does the sound of that compare?
 
im thinking that i might go open if i can get a more 'acceptable' quality of sound at that price range, and just use an el cheapo for when actually recording vocals and such.

I'd definitely give the SRH840 a try.  It's not much more than the SRH440.
