Once upon a time, I bought a Gmini 220 because I thought it would be nice to have a device that I could quickly dump photos to on the go.

I returned it after a week because it couldn't read my CF cards.

Out of amusement, I have followed the anguish of Gmini users and Archos firmware development in the 9 months that have followed. For exciting pain and suffering with version 12 that was released on Monday, I recommend going to Yahoogroups, searching on Gmini, and browsing the last few days of posts. The short of it is that Archos has made a device which is extremely unreliable for a significant percentage of its consumers for storing and retrieving .jpgs from CF cards.

Today I saw the following:

at $50 for a 1 gig CF card, are we nearing the point where no one needs to use their mp3 player as an image tank? If so, Archos products may lose their appeal (even more).
