I've been looking into buying a new source now for quite some time, but I'm not willing to pay the retail prices of players like Arcam cd72 and Rega Planet. I still want I player in this class range though, so I've made some posts in Swedish forums etc, looking for a high class cdp for a reasonable price.

I got a mail from someone that lives in Denmark, he has a Arcam 8 that he wants to sell. Is this a good player when compared with newer models like Arcam cd72? His player is probably ~5 yrs old, just my guess. I think Arcam stopped making them 1999. But I'm not sure. Pls correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I don't know about the alpha 8, but the alpha 9 was Arcam's first player with the Ring DAC, which is the same DAC used in the cd92 and cd23. I've heard a few people say the Alpha 9 sounds nearly identical to the cd92. The alpha 9 seems to sell used for between $500 and $550 while the cd92 sells for between $750 and $800 used.
