OK, I need some input. I just got a Rega Apollo and now I need a headphone amp. I'm looking for SS and about max $900 USD. I am really looking at the HR-2. Any other ideas?

HR2 sounds like a fine idea. Or you could get the XP7 if you want to run off batteries. The op-amp rolling can help you tailor the sound the way you like.
I've got an XP7 and being battery powered helps with listening in bed.

Those look like very intriguing options. How well do they function as preamps? I've been considering building a new speaker rig and if I could get a headphone amp / preamp I could get good monoblocks or a nice stereo power amp, instead of an integrated.
