I've had good experiences with TerraTec EWX 24/96 (don't know if its still in production). It is an "audiophile" card with RCA input/output jacks as well as digital in and out, based on the Envy24 chip.

Untill OpenSuse 10.2 switching between 2 different soundcards has given me some difficulties (well, not really the switching, but having two cards configured at once), but the now the happy days are here.

Dmix is enabled on newer alsa versions even if there is no /etc/asound.conf or .asoundrc, unless the card supports hardware mixing. So alsa out-of-the-box is running dmix (and upsampling to 48khz).If you want to override this you need to make your own config file.

Wait, the default alsa device is mapped to dmix?

I'm surrently looking for a good distro that I can run from inside windows off my USB key. I can't deal with windows when I am on other people's ocmputers. DSL sucks.

Any other recs?
