It's kind of a silly way to go about it, but the first real luck I had in finding a retailer in my area was through the Hammond catalog. I requested one awhile back, and enclosed with the catalog are a list of suppliers. They listed a couple in Atlanta besides the requisite Allied and Newark, which, as you found out - have no storefronts anymore. Turns out, that retailer is perhaps the only one left in Atlanta - they even sell Millett tubes and sockets (but at a price).
Unfortunately, the Hammond catalog lists only the Newark in Troy that you mention, and Allied in Grand Rapids and Livonia.
The second part of your post heading says "tools." There will surely be plenty of those in Michigan.
