I droped my Philips Discman only once (in 4 years of heavy use), but it was in my cd-player bag, so no damage. Never droped my iRiver (in 1 year), so far so good

I droped my Ipod 4G 40GB on concrete 3 times, Marble floors 2 times, and wood floors 2 times. all in all is 7 times plus low temperatures and some water, and now it's all scratched up all over but it continues to work since the day it came out of the box.

I think keeping your player in a skin of some sort is an excellent insurance plan. The skin absorbs 90% of the blow from a drop. This summer I'll be celebrating my Creative JB3's third birthday.

I dropped my new-since-Christmas ipod photo... off a ski lift...

...it's fine. I was relieved and extremely impressed when I picked it up and woke it up, and it hadn't even required a reboot. (It was in the default cardboard and vinyl sleeve type case with open corners, not a solid or cushiony case, but as far as I can tell it didn't even notice the fall.)

Obviously not enough, since he found it!

You can never have enough pow!

I have a Rio Karma. I've never had it crash because I dropped it or because I was doing rough activity with it, but on rare occasion it will freeze up while loading new songs. It's happened to me less than five times over the span of a year so it's not a problem. Always when I didn't have a paperclip handy, too.

I bent over to lift up a toilet seat once, and my iPod fell out of my shirt pocket into the bowl! I scooped it out (thank goodness the bowl hadn't been "used") and dried it off and it was fine.

See ya

All the skin protects is the finish. It doesn't do anything to protect the hard drive from being jarred.

It couldn't have been an easy fall -- it was directly under the lift so the snow wasn't as packed as it could have been, but the weather'd been warm enough that the snow was just mostly frozen slush. The indentation was maybe two inches, and from the looks of it it hit on a corner and slid less than six inches.

A friend of mine dropped his digital camera into the toilet. It stopped working. Since then I always tuck whatever electronics I'm carrying around into my bra, although admittedly this is less acceptable in public with my full-size ipod than it was with my infinitessimal little irock.

That would have really sucked is the bowl had been "used".
