I registered for school which starts on the 3rd of September.

The guy who runs the school is actually the Hewlett Packard Rep that comes into my store every other week.

He has some students who are on TV for the World Poker series. But he says even the beginner dealers who aren't too personable make around $18/hr($3.25 starting base, the rest is tips), and you personable ones who opened up make significantly more. I mean, it makes sense. You figure even if you're at the $2 table, somebody wins a hand, you get tipped like $2-10+...if that happens like 3 times, you're already fairly dece for that hour, and that's if you only dealt three huge hands...which is unlikely.

He said alot of the kids that go there end up getting into drugs because of the money being good (cash everynight...and a dece amount), and immediately get booted because it's a drug free community. Well, that's one thing I don't have to worry about, lol.

Anyhow, I was wondering what some of you guys have to think about it, or if any of you are actually dealers. It's dece money, and it's bring home everynight, so I'm stoked on it. It seems kinda dead end (aside from getting into casino management), but at the same time, if you're bringin home enough money, who cares if it's dead end if it's a significant amount per hour....or am I wrong here?

I don't know, sounds fishy to me. You might get that money but it won't be as easy as you think it is. IMHO it's the same as waiter, if they work in a busy restaurant, they can get that kind of money and mostly under table.

btw, another thing I can think of, IMHO you probably won't get that position on your first job, most likely, you'll have to pay your dues for some time before you get that position.

edit: I search on wiki for poker dealer, they give you some good infoPoker Dealer wiki

These 2 articles are links from Wiki

Well, the reason I thought about it was because he didn't push it onto me or anything. He just one day wore a poker school shirt, and I asked him about it.

I've asked around town (and the poker rooms here in town) and all of them almost exclusively hire from his classes. He can pretty much gaurentee you job placement, which is attractive.

I'm not going to quit my job or anything and just go for it, but it'll be a side thing, unless I can get a full time position and see how it planes out. But all the dealers I talked to at hte poker rooms, came from his class....which is why I was so intriqued.

I used to work with a guy who became a card dealer. He has a job in Pennsylvania and a job in New Jersey, pays for the house his physically and mentally abusive, pregnant wife wanted in the state she wanted it in, and generally hates existence. Actually, working in a casino is probably the happiest part of his life. I'm not sure what the point of my story was.

My dad was a dealer at Barona in Cali for a little over a month, then moved back to Vegas. He made around $400 a day in tips. He is now on call for Plazzo in Vegas, Harrahs, Treasure Island, and the Venetian. When Palzzo opens next year (They told him that he is near the top of the list) he will be making around $500 a day or more in tips. All I have to say is start small, and go big. My dad started at Foxwoods and worked there for a year and only made $22 an hr, and 2 months after he quit he was making $400 a day. Experience is the key to getting into the better casinos. Exp, Appearence, Personality, and Age, in that order.

Also, if you start working at a casino (your first one) you will probably get really ****** shifts, just take what they give you. My dad worked the graveyard for the first 4 months at Foxwoods.

Graveyards don't bother me...infact, I would prefer them....I'm taking what they give me and running with it, lol.

There's a cruise casino like 5 minutes from my house. I'm HOPING to be able to get that, so I don't really have to drive anything or EVER worry about traffic of anything. I can ride a bike to work and completely eliminate my work expenses....whereas if I were to work at the Poker Room here in town, it's a 35 mile one-way trek. 70 miles a day....that can get $$$.

Friend of mine does it. Horrible working times and you get addicted to poker since there's nothing else to do in the breaks. But he enjoys it and it's good money that pays for college.

A close friend of mine is a Floor Manager at the MGM Grand in Detroit. A Floor Manager is a guy who supervises a handful of dealers at game tables at the same time. He started as a dealer and still fills in when necessary. Like others have said, he got really crummy shifts for a while. Now he works the best shifts and makes very good money, but it took him a few years to get there. That guy can multiply 35, 17, and 8 by any number you can think of in milliseconds. :p

Alot of the poker rooms have no smoking...on your cruise casinos, you can't smoke unless your on deck.
