Sorry if wrong forum, kinda new around here... Is it just a matter of good receivers having a good jack? Are there some that are "known" to have a good output?

Try it?

Look into the design to see how the jack is driven? Check if the output impedance is documented (that can give the design away and can be a problem in its own right as well)?

My NAD C352 has a good headphone output, so I guess other NAD receivers have a good one as well.
