Do you have a budget? You can spend a couple of years and $$$$$ (plus $$$$$$) to find the greats (I did).

Or, try to source Siemens early long plate 5814A, or Valvo 6067. You are done.

If above are tough to find (it will be) or too expensive (it will be), good sounds can still be found with Amperex PQ 7316, Mullard CV4003, Tungsram 12AU7, RCA blackplate, etc.

Syl 6189 and RCA cleartops are pretty decent tubes, though.

Oh, don't forget to ask Mikhail if his circuit can take an E80cc instead of 12AU7. Many 12AU7 components can, but it will require ability to provide more current. If so, you are in luck b/c Tungsram E80cc will blow your mind.

i just changed a set of ecc81, and ecc83 on my other amp to mullards, after some rolling, i felt using 4 ecc81 sounds better than two ecc83 and two ecc81,

ecc81 = gain 60, 82, gain 80, and 83, gain 100.. you could probably jump arnd these tubbies except you have to drive them harder with lower gain.. i found more clarity in the lower gain tubes though..

cv4004's a good replacement as well, but those nos are real expensive, supposedly to sound much warmer and richer

Except for the B749, IMO any Amperex (Holland) are the most musical.

Typically, the 5814/5963 sounds better than 12AU7 designation for all American made tubes.

Sadly, no. I got my few from a gentleman who was clearing out his really old stash; I'm not aware of any tube dealers/sellers who has the genuine early long-plate Siemens 5814A for sale.

Raytheon (also labelled CBS) 5814A are very good, if not quite as sublime, subsitutes. Plenty of sellers has these...
