Take a look at the Eastern Electric Minimax. At $900 it is both small (12" x 13" x 3) and within your budget. The player is very musical (it is driven by two 6DJ8/6922 tubes) and has a built in headphone amplifier that competes easily with dedicated amps costing hundreds of dollars. Unfortunately, the reason why it is so inexpensive is because there is no dealer network, so you will have to buy if you want to try. The good news is that there is a 30-day return policy and the dealer is a great guy. I'm sure elnero will be by soon to second the recommendation.

I had a chance to A/B test an NEC CDR-602 + Rotel RDP-980 with a Musical Fidelity X-Ray v3 a while back, and the X-Ray was noticably better in every way, so I'll second the recommendation for the MuFi unit.

Never heard the Ack, tho, so I don't know how it stacks up.

The audionote CDT-1 with a small DAC-1 makes for a killer headphone rig!
