Any good small, compact CD players?

Pigmode, you beat me to it. I wanted to ask MacDEF: doesn't that NAD/PSB system you've got for sale run circles around that JVC mini-system you have and just about any other one you've heard? I have a similar JVC minisystem (which I think is pretty good as mini-systems go) and I've heard the PSBs, so I'd be shocked if the answer wasn't hell yes.

I have a mini-system sitting on my desk at work because I really needed something small and it's better as a CD player driving my Corda than a Panasonic portable, plus gives me FM. I never use the speakers except for very low level background music every once in a great while. But I wouldn't get one for my house. I have systems in my bedroom, my study at home as well as my living room and family room...if I had another room to put one in I'd certainly be looking into MacDEF's NAD/PSB system.

Hmmm, you didn't mention what system you are using in the bathroom?

I should qualify my statement since I have not actually heard what's out there other than a few units owned by friends. Still, I think seperates from a good company such as NAD give a user much more depth in terms of SQ, and flexibility in the upgrade path.

Well, yeah

The two reasons I wasn't pushing it here more were 1) no tuner and CDP, and I thought Neruda wanted *everything* at once

; and 2) didn't want to be too shameless. But yeah, it even beats the NAD Music System, since the 304 is a better amp than the 310 variant included in the Music System.

If life were fair, i'd have the money to setup a good system with seperate components for less than $300 overall

. But that'd be tricky. So I'm taking the easy/cheap route, even if it means lower quality for the meantime. Like I said, if I feel it will give me a dramatic improvement in sound, I'll go with a CD player only and forget the tuner and speakers. But I'd rather not.

As soon as I get my JMT amp, I'll go out and try as many systems as I can and decide what I want that way. Thanks for all the help guys!

So I noticed...I think I'm actually considering getting a denon 370 now and letting the speaker thing fall into place later. Compact system be damned! I want sound quality first and foremost!

However, I'm going to go to good guys and check out some compact systems just in case I change my mind.

I think going with the Denon 370 now makes a lot of sense since it can be used as a building block for a better system later. It should sound better than any minisystem anywhere close to its price range. If you want a tuner, just buy one of the Sangean "walkman" portable AM/FM stereos. I have one and it has decent sound quality.
