Any fans of the Shelby Cobras (the real ones from the early/mid 60's)?

Sweet! I got an opportunity to drive a 1967 GT500KR several years ago. It was an automatic and when I stomped on the gas it scratched off every time it shifted! I would love to have a '67 blue one... but I'm not rich.

I'm with you, my friend. I love those 1964.5 - 1968 Mustangs; especially the Shelby Mustangs. And; I am very interested to see the new 2005, when it arrives.

Currently; I drive a 2003 MazdaSpeed.

My uncle, who lives in Las Vegas, now has Sunbeam Tiger and purchased a 1965 289 Cobra new and still has the original window sticker and a bunch of pics. He lost the car in a divorce years ago(he's been married 5 times) and from what I hear his ex-wife sold the car for chump change back in 1990.

My Dad tells me stories of how he took my Mom to buy new car in 1967 and she almost convinced him to buy a nice used 1966 GT-350. The dealer did'nt want to deal much on the car and wanted as much for it as the 1967 ChevyII SS (with the 327/350 horse motor and 4-speed) that she ended up buying. Other than that I've only seen Shelby's at car shows and the Vintage races here at Road America. I saw Carroll Shelby at the Mayo Clinic a few years ago but he is not a very nice guy and did'nt seem to be having a good time there. The nurses told me I should leave him alone because "He's a cranky old screwer".

When I was a Jude's house last year for the meet I saw three GT500KR's right near his house. I later found out that a guy not too far from him is one of the premier Shelby restoration experts in the world and worked for Shelby back when they were in the heyday.

Definitely a sweet ride. 427 side oiler 4 spd Cobras are officially the fastest production line muscle cars ever built. Last I heard these babes (especially one that is fully restored with all numbers matching) were running in the high six figures to little over 1M. I have yet to see a real one since it is extremely rare, all the ones I've seen were kit car reproductions.

Only about '350' 427 Cobra Roadsters were ever built (original). Ken Miles drove one (with street tires) 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds * 0 to 100 mph back to 0 in 13.8 seconds.

Here are some of the models in my Motorsport Collection.

The 427 S/C pictured below is signed by Carroll Shelby...

Ha! giddy Up! Sunbeam Tiger had a 260 Ford V8...
Sunbeam launched its new, exciting, hybrid sports model the Tiger in 1964. This "wolf in sheep's clothing" model blended the Alpine bodyshell with an American Ford V8 engine normally found in the AC Cobra! The Ford 260 cubic inch (4260cc) V8 provided 164bhp and could propel the Tiger to 120mph, with 0-60 arriving in around 9 seconds.

Rack and pinion steering ensured precise handling, an all-synchromesh four speed gearbox was standard which could be coupled to an optional limited slip differential. Despite the large capacity of the V8 engine the Tiger managed to return a respectable 20mpg thanks to its light open body.

Here's the Tiger's 'Brother'........ The 260 Cobra.

Flame on!

Uh; No. I paid $20,000. The WRX was $24,000+. I evaluated the WRX. In some ways the WRX is better, in some ways it's not. First off; The 'Speed will outhandle the WRX (unless it's raining). Is Subaru quality better than Mazda? I doubt it.

Oh; did I mention the WRX is ugly?

But; that's all personal opinion. I am not the flaming sort. I do like the STi.

WRX's and MAZDASPEED's aren't rice. Certain Hondas, etc.... with loud fart cans, etc... - now; that's rice.

Subaru quality is most definitely superior to Mazda, I won't comment on the looks, but I will let them speak for themselves. Regarding handling; not a chance the mazda would outhandle the WRX. I took the Mazdaspeed for a test run, there was no comparison. I would suspect the WRX MT would cost less than your car with the mods. I would also be willing to bet the WRX would lay waste to the Mazda in any competition.

My Uncle's car is a 1967 GT with the full-on Shelby tuned 289 and a top-loader 4-speed. It's black and has the same wheels as that car. He bought the car on the day I was born and says that's why he's held onto it all these years. This car has survived all four of his divorces(even after his fourth wife swore she'd burn it if she won it in the divorce) and is special to all of us. He says that the car is willed to me (I don't know if that's true or not) and I helped him fund the restoration when he ran out of money a few years back. He now has a 2003 Ferrari 360 Modena but the Tiger is my favorite car of his to drive.
