Hey everyone,

I'm considering picking up a pair of either HP series Grados or PS-1s (if I can ever find them).
For those of you that have had both GS-1000's and either PS-1s or the HP series (any) at the same time, what are the siginifcant sonic differences between the 3?

There was a really good comparison thread on this subject about 3 years ago. Use the search function I think I asked this question. It was in depth and detailed. I thought it was one of the better threads on Head-Fi with lots of great content and information from people who actually owned the headphones and spent quality time with them.

Audio Cliff Notes:

HP1000 series = Analytical
PS-1 = Fun
GS1000 = Soundstage

I’ve had the HP-2’s and PS-1’s but not the GS1000. I personally preferred the PS-1’s by a wide margin. As much as I wanted to be analytical I found the PS-1’s to be a fun headphone to listen to.

In the long run any of the 3 are great headphones and more a matter of personal preference. What are you music preferences? Are you looking for an analytical headphone? Ever hear the RS-1’s?

Hey Mitch,

Thanks for the input. I'd really like to hear a PS-1. Like you, I think I'd rather hear something fun, than have a headphone that can analytically bring out every shortcoming in the recording.
My musical preferences are extremely varied. I'll basically listen to anything, it just depends on my mood. I've noticed that female vocals have been my preference lately. but that could change in the next hour.
I owned RS-1's for about a year prior to purchasing my GS-1000's. I loved them and, although it doesn't seem like the popular opinion around here, I'm glad I did 'upgrade' to the GS-1000's. They just seem like RS-1's with soundstange. In my opinion I haven't found anything that can come even close to the GS-1000's. I'm pretty sure that the 'Grado sound' is what I'm looking for, which is why I figure that the only way to go up from here is either HP-X or PS-1.
From my reading PS-1's are the way to go and hopefully in the next few months, I'll be able to give impressions on them.

gs1000 'soundstage' is a joke. You can get the same effect by slapping those bagel pads on ps-1's. Using the same pads, the ps-1 has more percise imaging, so it wins when it comes to soundstage in my rig.

There isn't much about the gs1000 that I enjoyed while I had them. Bass is looser then ps-1, the sound is less refined, the highs are brighter and more splasy, the midrange is coloured, yet not magical like its cousin the rs-1.

The hp1000 has a dry accurate sound to it, with really tight bass. The ps-1 has a groovier sound, with a lot more bass and a bit more lively mids.

Slapping the GS1K pads on the PS1s does make a joke soundstage.

While much better than on any non-GS1K Grado, that's not saying much. Then again, I'm one of the few that can't stand PS1 itself. Give me the Ed.9 for the bass (which is all I give the PS1 credit for) otherwise I'd go RS1 instead (and I dislike that phone as all-rounders too). Course the GS1K has those midrange issues that needs to be handled with right amp/tubes. To the original question - the GS v. PS v. HP phones sound surprisingly little alike (considering how similar all SR and RS do).

This is fair, but I'd replace 'Soundstage' with 'unGrado'. 'Soundstage' sounds like Grados+soundstage, which the GS1Ks are not. If I was to have only one phone for all genres/listens, 'fun' wouldn't cut it and nor would any other production Grado. Both the HP and GS phones could get systems built around to satisfy that job for me.
