seems like a b-52 has everything you would want, tubes,balanced& single ended, preamp etc. Are there any cheaper alternatives from other amp makers maybe? Something in the 1k range. Maybe have it use cheaper parts and have a cheaper PSU internally, but still have a professionally done chassis.

Might be able to acquire a basic balanced PPX3 from Singlepower at that price point. Worth a shot anyway.
