The best way to appreciate the ALO modded HFI780 is to have a proper source and amp first.
They do sound freaking awesome, and very close to the Edition 9, but if the detail isn't there then the cable wont help, it will just help you hear how bad your source is. But a cable will never add something that isn't there in the first place. Reminds me of the guy running his HFI780 right from an iPhone and then complaining about the headphones not being so good. You don't want to be him.
So, use the stock 780 via soundcard and save for a $255 Meier 2MOVE which is a known good deal, or wait for the reviews on iBasso D2 for $199, or consider the Go-Vibe petite which has good reviews by oicdn. The iBasso D1 is pretty darn nice too, for about the price of the 2MOVE. I would recommend the Headstage Lyrix Total Pro USB for $189 but I understand your reluctance to give the builder a second chance.
