I also believe that most of these people, those who participate in tests anyway, are completely sincere. They've just fallen prey to confirmation bias. If someone kept score of every single hit and miss, the outcome would be like random chance.

Yeah, I actually forgot the MOST bizarre thing he would do. When his dousing bob would start oscillating, he would start silently asking himself yes/no questions, and the dousing bob would move harder for "Yes" and less for "No". So, when he found water, he would stop and silently ask "Is the water above 500 ft" (dousing bob says yes) "Is the water above 250 ft?" (dousing bob says no) "Is the water above 300 ft?" (dousing bob says yes). He would then announce: "The water is here and it is between 250 & 300 ft down."

He would do the same thing to check whether his cows & horses were pregnant and when they would be born.

As I said, an entertaining & kooky old redneck...
