Next Apple will make iTunes for Win.. err.

Curious what this move means for Sony. Is it a shift to reality?

Not only does the HMP-A1 support MP3 natively, but Sony will ship it with MusicMatch's Jukebox software.

seriuesly though, If anyone wants a real licenscode for MMJB just pm me. I got one with my iPod and I'll never install that piece of crap on my system again. You gotta give it credit for it's tag-lookup though.

sony's japanese press release

this won't be the last of its kind

archos, creative, samsung and now sony have video jukebox players planned or in production

now all we need is some hacker to port some games to these babies...

but wonder if sound quality will suffer as a result of accomodating all these new functions

It's mainly a result of Sony's internal factionalism. They often have different divisions / "companies" in business jargon working on similar products. This, the Vaio Pocket and Sony's previous HDD video player were each developed by different people (source: AV watch).

Sony's been trying to rein in all the different "companies." For home video recorders they've had three different groups develop three different products (CoCoon, PSX, Sugoroku). Although PSX got the lion's share of news coverage, Sugoroku accounted for at least 2/3 of Sony's disc-burning video recorder sale, and Sony only shipped about 1/4 of all PSXs it had planned to ship in its first quarter (source: PC watch).

Remember you still have to use proprietary software to transfer things to this player, even though SonicStage is not involved
