The new version of the firmware has an EQ limit function to prevent that

And what is this? The new 350s don't have hiss?!

Does that mean the one I'll get sent (mine broke, and it was under warranty) won't have hiss?

SWEET

(Please someone confirm? :P)

I updated my firmware the first day i had it and i get almost no distortion at high volumes with my KSC 35's or UR-30's. and if you have high impedence headphones you don't need to have it set real high to get any sound. I have mine set anywhere between 14-20 depending on source recorded volume. up to 20 with my UR-30's and around 16-17 with the 35's.

Max volume is 40
i don't hear distortion until around 38-39, but that doesnt matter i don't listen to it that loud

Mine didn't hiss with either firmware, i know i don't have the best headphones, but it still didn't hiss.

Now the line out that is a different story that starts to distort at around 32, but i don't use it so it doesn't matter.

When did you purchase the SlimX?

I bought mine almost a year ago (a few months after it came out)

and the hiss is quite noticeable through my Senn MX400.. and just slightly noticeable through the KSC35s

[Then of course, it started to skip very badly by just.. well walking near it oO so I sent it back.. hope the new one won't hiss!! =]

i bought it this past monday. It sounds/works awesome. i am very pleased with it.
i don't notice any hiss, does it happen during music playback or between songs??? maybe it is my headphones as i don't have any really expensive pairs. But like stated before i use KSC 35's and UR-30's.

Maybe they did fix the hiss in the "new" version of the SlimX =]

If this is true... awesome!

I, too, used the KSC-35s (WAY too bad they're discontinued.. mine are starting to wear down... stupid flimsy clips.. sure sound good though.. comparable to my eggos! :P).

At night when I go to sleep... when it is very quiet... and when I set volume down to about 12.. that's the only time I would notice the hiss on the 35s.

(Oh, and it happens both during playback and between songs... like when you pause a song or press stop... even when you turn it on.. on my old one anyways.... when's the new one getting here? >_<)

Oh, and thanks for the reply! =]

OakIris,

I wasn't specific enough about my description of the Sony players...sorry bout that. And I am only talking about the newer, modern models when I say they have a thin sound. What I meant when I used those certain words to describe the sound was what the Sony sounded like compared to the SlimX. When I say thinner sounding, I mean not as full as the SlimX. When I say less warm, I mean that the Sony's are simply not on the warm side, but rather a more neutral side. The same goes for flat...flat means no real exagerated frequencies at all...yet, sometimes we need some exageration because of the recording processes as well as many other factors. Flat, less warm, and thinner than the SlimX sound, describe many peoples listening tastes. For example, I like somewhat exxagerated phones such as the HD600's, which IMO, have exagerated midbass. But I also REALLY enjoy the Etymotic sound, which is flat as can be, kind of on the thin side (due to their physical size and lack of visceral bass), and has a somewhat warm midrange...but all that is the characteristic of the Ety's, not the cd player. Me, I honestly like all types of sound...and with an EQ, like the one on the SlimX(and I think you should invest in one for whatever phone you get) you can flaten, warm up, or thin out any song you want, regardless of what phones or player you have.

I got my new SlimX in the mail today.... they told me to send it with no accessories.... so I just sent the unit

They send back the whole package.. with ac adaptor... new remote.. batteries... everything - wow :P

And there's still hiss out the headphone out ><

If you compare the headphone out and the line-out you can hear the difference.. and its quite noticeable on the Eggos. [when music is not playing, or at low levels]

Just so people know.

It kinda makes me want to buy the 400... or the 500 when it comes out looks pretty promising.

I like all the features.. all pretty useful, and another big thing - asian font support... always useful since I don't listen to much English songs :P

But really.. I could REALLY REALLY live without the damned hiss.... not as noticeable on the KSC35s but you'll notice them on the Eggos
