Could someone explain what happens technically to the audio signal when feeding a normal movie from a DVD transport to a DAC like a Benchmark or Bel Canto, through a normal 2 channel system?

Isn't the output 48khz; don't the DACs require 44.1khz input to do their magic?

I get what happens if I hook the DVD player's normal RCA analogue outputs to a stereo amp (DVD's onboard DAC does the conversion 48khz to PCM, right?). I just don't get what happens if you throw a fancy outboard DAC in there.

Both the Benchmark DAC1 and Bel Canto DAC2 can operate from 32KHz to 192KHz*, including 48KHz which is the rate DVD-Video audio tracks run at.

The DVD player's onboard DAC converts the digital PCM audio (running at 48KHz) to analog (hence the name Ditigal to Analog Convertor).

*early versions of the DAC1 only go up to 96KHz
