I have to disagree with you. Although I don't have a lot of recordings, all of mine are from the 70s and almost all have some sort of audience chatter recorded. Some have more audience chatter than others, but they are there in all.

whenever i go to concerts, i get really annoyed by the people screaming free bird... it's old. now all of the cool kids shout out song names that are from bands the polar opposite at who you're seeing (i screamed for hips don't lie at a bob dylan concert... not while he was playing though!)
