I imagine (I think he even said) the current landscape of vendors and influencers was no longer fun to be working within. Like that StereoNET guy who just retired. Tyll needed a change.Indeed.

Yes, once personal audio exploded in popularity, predictably the noise and circus came along for the ride. Fortunately we get to decide what we pay attention to or tune out.

around 1k usd is still where best deals are at, its just the ceiling of the price is getting inappropriately way out of wack compared to the gain you get in SQ.
Audio is improving in both extreme, you get way better sound from cheaper gear these days, for sure, esp in IEMs realm, but the Exotic stuff is also getting more expensive way faster than the SQ improvements.
