I know someone who's selling an old Denon receiver, and I may be able to get it for $20 or so. Will it be worthwhile to hook it up to my comp and use the HP jack instead of just into the HP jack on the soundcard?

Why not try it out? It's not a big commitment at that price. I use the headphone out of my integrated amplifier to listen to music and never really considered buying a dedicated headphone amp.

Not old enough. An AVR-1000. I'm going to look for a "vintage" one from the '70s instead. If nothing else, I love their looks.

Yeah, I wouldn't spend the $20 unless you just need a cheap amp for a garage system or whatever. It won't sound good from its headphone out, that I can almost guarantee.
