I now have the AMR CD77 for home demo for a week or so.The CD player in the supplied flightcase is extremely heavy (over 40kg,the case must be about 14kg),when out of the flightcase, the player still very large, is much more manageable have the champagne version. It’s very well made with the AMR logo engraved on the top and front panel, nice touch sensitive front panel buttons and chunky metal remote. The unit does get warm after a few hours use (particularly the CD bay) and I have noticed that on this sample that the CD bay drawer gets a bit stiffer after the the unit has been on for a few hours, when cool it’s easier to move. The display can be dimmed or turned off

I am starting with the Digital Master 1 (no filtering) and Digital Master 2 (some analogue filtering) other settings available are 2x oversampling,4x oversampling,96khz upsampling and 192khz upsampling. The unit I have has around 500hrs on it.

I still have the Ensemble Dirondo Drive and Hi Dac and will compare (as best I can) these units with the AMR.UK prices for he AMR is £4400 and the 2 box Ensemble is £8350

Hmm... No one's bit yet eh. Thanks for the pictures. I don't suppose you could put one up of the flightcase? This vs. the AR CD7 would be epic! I'd probably side with the CD7 being american and all which limits the usefulness of the British competion. But the might Naim CD555+ps owns all? Not a problem I will have to face in the near future in any case.

Have fun!

I've heard that the CD7 does sound similar to the CD77?

The CD7 is over £7k new in the UK

The CD7, to these ears, is a step below the AMR. The only player I've heard that I would take over the CD77, is the APL NWO...which is far more pricey.

After living with my Modwright Transporter for a bit of time though, I'm finally done searching for a digitl front-end.

Whoa. Thanks for the pics of the flight case. That thing is ready for the apocalypse! It's a great addition to headfi as their the only images I've seen of it. I encourage you to add your impressions when you get the chance with all your l33t headphone gear. I'll be interested for one. The cheaper price of the CD7 makes it a tighter competetion in NA but the CD77 definately got the looks (kind of a boring display though). There are just so many interesting things about this player: Does it look the way it sounds? Strong, dynamic, forward? The filtering options. And still I wonder how it stands up to the NAIM. Very cool. Kudos man! I really hope youare enjoying it.

Dan does great work with output stages and PS, but it looks like Rick Schultz will be offering a digital mod to the Modwright Transporter for "$300-500" that will add the 32bit/211KHz upsampler and the 32 bit AKM DAC chip. Now *THAT* may end many people's journeys...

Upsampled 32 bit Oppo heaven!!!!!! OMG!!!!!

I'll also mention my listening comparisons to my Marantz CD12.I have been using PS1 phones and SDS-XLR amp hooked up to a PS Audio P600 power plant.

The Ensemble in direct comparison to the Marantz does initially impress but
it's too detailed and dry sounding for me (if you had alot of very well recoded CD's than it might be a different story). They both have similar sound stages but the Ensemble sounds a little thin and although the Marantz bass is not as well controlled it sounds 'fuller' and much easier to listen to for long
periods,more 'natural' you might say.

I really like the Digimaster 1 setting on the AMR,the no filter option. It sounds very good more like the CD12 than the Ensemble. It has a 'fuller' sound with a deeper bass than the CD12 but slightly more detailed. It is quite laidback in it's overall presentation which I imagine some would not like.I can listen to AMR for long periods without fatigue. It does require a good half hour warm before listening.

Sweet! I'm still watching this thread. I was happy it was bump with good news. That Marantz CD12 was pretty well loved back in the day. Is it true that analogue filter 2 slighly jogs the upper freq. back into (supposed) proper place? Giving more lightness and air to a recording?

Pics and impressions Rob!!!!
Your upgrades have motivated me to go from the Dynavector XX2 MKII cartridge to the Te Kaitora Rua cartridge and I have started auditioning phonostages. Have you looked any further on your table upgrade?
