From what I've read, the K240 would pair best with a solid state amp, rather than a tube amp but I have no experience with amping headphones so can anyone recommend a good amp? I'm not looking for anything too expensive but I don't want to spend too little and only end up with a negligable improvement in sound quality, so I'll let you guys set my budget (but please don't go over the top, I don't want to spend more on the amp than I did on the headphones I'm going to be using it for).

The HA-160 is well known for driving well Akg hp's.

But, from what i read...your budget is less than $100?

If it's not too late, how about Fiio's E5 or Headroom's Total Airhead?  Both are within your price range(27.99 and 99.99 respectively) and should drive your AKGs nicely.

I wouldn't recommend the E5, from my experience it is largely not worth the money.  Save up the money and get the E7 (~80 I believe).

Actually the E7 is 99.99USD.  I understand the E5 is not the best portable solution out there, but I'm getting surprisingly good results pairing it with my Shure SRH440 and AKG K 240 Studio.
