A week or so ago everyone seemed to think to get proper quality out of the HD6X0's/580's hooked up to an ipod you need an amp. Why those three? Why not the HD595's? I'm thinking about getting HD595's for my iriver H320, what do you think about an amp for that?

The reason for amping those three is that they really need it in order to sound even halfway decent. The HD595, on the other hand, is fairly easy to drive, even from portable sources. Amping certainly helps improve them further, but it's not the necessity that it is with the others, they'll generally sound pretty good regardless. They do sound fantastic out of a good amp, mind you. Soundstage and bass usually recieve the greatest benefit from amplification.

The HD595 has lower impedance and higher sensitivity than the three others. So the HD595 will play louder with less power. That said, I still think they need an amp. But I'm the kind of guy that doesn't fint it strange amping a set of Sennheiser MX earbuds

Some people will claim amp is not a needed for the HD595, but I find it very beneficial, for both the 50 and 120 ohm version of this headphone.

The HD 595 aren't for portable use. I thought I'd point that out.

They're huge and open, so I wouldn't bother going outside with them. But they can be used out of a portable.

you can wear the HD650 outside if you want, but do you really want to wear them outside. for one they're open headphones (sound will leak out and in) and two, have you seen the size of these cans?

The HD595 looks & feels more compact though.

You may give a look at the latest news on Headroom - that 'kit' to carry your laptop + amped HD595 around with you... sweet, if you feel like standing the carrying hassle.

Oh, and I also enjoyed the added comments on the HD595.
