I was planning on going with the Total Bithead for $200, but I have since changed my mind. Here is the equipment that will be used:

Source: Sony SCDCE595
Music: Rap, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Country, Classical
Headphones: Grado SR225, AKG K501, Grado SR60, AKG K81DJ (eventually maybe a Senn HD595 or Beyer DT880)

Anything under $200 that will suit my needs and go with that equipment for a nice starter home setup? I don't mind used.

Fire Stones Beyond Cute yes, its a kick arse amp for the price) & the Portaphile ultra can be had for 170.00 & 189.00..DR XIN Super Micro Mini for 199.00. I too have the Sony 595, & listen to Rap, & Rock..I currently use the 595's, So not sure how the Grados wil take to the amps, they seem finicky to me.. I'm getting my Portaphile Ultra maxed, next week.. can't wait..

Hi there,

I don't have firsthand experience with Beyer or AKG, but lots with Grado and Senn. I use a Perreaux Silhouette, which I bought used here for about $200. I think the SL1 retails for $299.00 US, so if you shop around you ought to be able to find one for 200 or just less (particularly as newer models have come out). The Perreaux sounds fanstastic with Grado in particular. I used mine alongside an RA1, and wound up selling the RA1. The "synergy" alleged to be found in the RS1/RA1 seems better embodied in the Grado/Perreaux.

It's certainly worth a shot, especially if you're not planning to go mobile (it's AC only). If it doesn't work out, you can usually find a buyer here within days.

Following up on my own comments, I see there's an SL1 for sale on the amp forum, seller asking $150.00, if it hasn't been snatched up:wink:

I, too, was in the same boat not long ago. After lots of search I settled with Xin Supermini. The main reason is the new 4th channel layout and All Xin's amPS are known to give same SQ! So you can get SQ of Macro which is a 350$ amp and many reviewers compared its SQ on par with RS Honet and other >350$ amps.
OP-AMP rolling is another plus factor. The form factor is just amzing.

It works with my K701 and MS2i without any noticeable humming and sounds wonderful.

I also have the Sony ce 595 and run Senn hd580's and Grado sr80's with it. Without a doubt, the Little Dot MKIII tube amp at $199 is one of the best bargains on the market! Outstanding amp and it makes my Senn's and Grado's shine like magic!
