Looking for something to tame the 'brightness' of the NS500V.

Currently using a Meta42, but I can use an upgrade. Anything around $500 would do.

Thanks in advance!

Humm.. It is a lil bright. you might try some different IC's maybe some DIY Belden 89259 IC's. That or Tube amp or both. The 500 is especially bright on redbook. Thats why mine is now delegated to DVD use only.

as i have read here - at that price point - you can try the singlepower MPX3 - it will cost a bit more .

then there is the MG head OTL. well within the price range.

in my experience with the ns500v and the mg head you will find no combination of tubes that will tone down the brightness of this machine. mine is also doing only dvd duty and the occasional sacd play, but that's it, I can't stand the brightness!

Why not, instead of trying to fix the problem by changing the amp, go straight to the source? (heh, heheh)

Seriously though, if you're going to plunk down $500 for a new amp, you could also spend $500 on a better source, right?

Rizumu- You have a good point, but I do indeed like the sound of the 500V, just a *tad* too bright for my tastes when playing back redbook. Under SACD, it sounds really good.. I guess, I would like to find a more 'hifi' amp if possible.

Would the MG head + HD600 + NS500V be a good combo?

Hi KurtW- Not sure of the opamp, I never got the exact specs from the builder. I'll look into changing the opamp.

Try auditioning a headroom amp in your price range. That might fix the problem; that's what I use and I have very favorable things about the HD600 + NS500V + airhead combo (although it could stand to use a higher qual amp).

Cheers,

Mullard 7189’s for power tubes or the Tung-Sol 5751 for the driver tube will “Tame” the brightness in the MG Head.

Picking the right interconnects will also have some effect.

It’s better to solve the problem than to band-aid the symptoms though.
