Hi All,
Just got my HD 25-1 II and have been thinking of portable amp+DAC under $200 to be paired with MacPro/Iphone as sources .
Any suggestion?

I have one of those the first thing you should look into is upgrading that steel cable... either a stock HD600 or HD650 before looking at a DAC/AMP

I still use the steel cable and I think the sound quality is still very good. What's the sonic difference between steel and copper anyway?

from what i remember bass tightens up, and it becomes warmer, to me at least the upgrade was worth it just to a stock HD600/HD650 cable anything else is overkill. but i had to upgrade as i usually got hearing fatigue after a couple of songs with the stock cables.

It was a greatly noticeable difference to me as well. Stock HD25 cable to stock HD600/650 cable (resoldered the plug to 3.5mm).

You should definitely try it first, it's a $15 experiment; if you still want improved sound quality at that point, then go ahead and invest in a portable amp.
