What amp/dac combo would you recommend for these, preferably something that also allow switching to speakers. Budget is $1000 total for both.

Ive been recommended the following:

Schiit Lyra 3
WA7 Fireflies (Was told overpriced)
fostex HP-A4BL (as told are too weak)
Audio GD NFB-11 (was told not a good pairing)
Metrum Acoustics Amethyst
etc...

Im really overwhelmed here. Everyone has their own opinion and there are a lot of options. I guess i would prefer a single amp/dac combo device but separate is fine too.

I will be using for long hours while gaming as well so im not sure tube amps would be good for this.

Top of my list to recommend to someone is the NFB-11.28, as I've been happy using the NFB-11.28 myself
(had the NFB-15.32 & NFB-15 before the NFB-11.28)

Where did you hear that the NFB-11.28 does not match well with the HD800S.

I have my Darkvoice 336SE OTL tube headphone amplifier ($214-$250) connected to the line-output (RCA) jacks on my NFB-11.28,
so I have the option of using solid state or tube, to drive my headphones.
