It's usually said that ambiophonics aren't going to work with headphones, but I'm not fully convinced yet. The idea of ambiophonics is to get a headphone-like sound, with a dramatic hall-like soundstage. It's achieved by using two speakers next to each other right in front of the listener, with a dividing wall in between to eliminate crosstalk. In addition, the hall ambience is played through 1-4 speaker pairs, the first pair placed at a 55 degree angle.
I'm thinking that the first pair of speakers could be replaced with open-back headphones - at least that would avoid crosstalk as much as a barrier. But sound won't come from right ahead. What do you people think? Did anyone try it already?
It needs a dedicated ambiophonics syntehsizer source also.
