Steve Vai has called Y. Malmsteen a 'whale amoung minnows' because of the way he introduced classical style and phrasing into his electric guitar solo's, and listening to them I am impressed with this and his monster chops. In the end I find Malmsteens songs not very enjoyable; the solos are all there, but the structure of the songs is hack work. Steve Vai on the other hand can create a guitar structure for a song that is FUN to listen to and his solos are amazing. 'Going Crazy' (Vai with DL Roth), shows exactly what I'm talking about: a very inventive rhythm part that *in itself* is almost a kind of running solo- and then a main solo that shows just how much he had in reserve the whole time! Malmsteen is pretty amazing, but Vai has the whole package and in my opinion is very very enjoyable to listen to.
