If I understand you correctly your saying your headphones listening level is under 100% - And I'd say amplification does a lot more than just volume.

The way I see it, it's when the magnet gets the swing that it needs to operate the entire diaphragm. It can be made loud, but detail is lost, when a inadequate amp is used.
