From what I understand, the iMod (for the 4th gen ipod) simply moves the line out from the dock to the headphone out. (Correct me if im wrong)

Is there a way I could just listen to my headphones through the ipods dock? I know I could just buy an ipod dock and those have a headphone out, but I was hoping for a more portable solution.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

The iMod does more than move the line out. I'm not an audio engineer, but I understand that it also removes other obstacles in the signal path and replaces lower quality capacitors with 2 Black Gate Capacitors. I don't have any idea what that means, but it sounds great.

The alternative to the iMod if you want to keep your iPod is to just get a decent line out cable. Just do a search for line out cable and you should find something. The leading seller of these is Audio Line Out or ALO, but there are others that are less expensive.

wow that got off topic fast lol.

Anyway, I am just going to make a line out cable and buy a Pa2v2 amp. I found a site that had the pin-out for the ipods dock connector, so assembling the cable will be rather simple.

I understand that it wont sound as good as an imod, but i think it will pair nicely with my pa2v2 and grado sr60. I dont think I have nice enough headphones to justify spending 200 on my source...

Smart choice. It really isn't worth it to get an iMod unless you have really revealing phones and a high quality amp. Sounds like you'll have a very balanced set up.

I am glad to hear some positive feedback on my setup!

I completed the line out cable with much success! It was my first audio DIY and I now I am excited to start on another project. I am thinking about getting a pair of headphones for on the go (Altec Lansing iM716) and performing the podectomy mod on them. With 68ohm resistors in place of the pod I think they will sound good and be a good fit with the PA2v2 as well.
