There's the ibasso dx50. Then there's the hifiman line-up as well. If you want cheap bang for the buck have a look at sandisk clip+ and etc.

The iBasso dx50 is really good also its cheaper than fiio x3. You can also order 8gb Sansa clip+ or clip zip and buy 64gb microSD card within $100 but make sure you install rockbox on it.

dx50 is not cheaper than x3, at least where I am from. It's MSRP is slightly higher.

Even 16-bit/44.1Khz resolution music should sound really good on the FiiO X3.
For something lower cost then the Fiio X3, check out the Cowon brand.

For a good value, get a Sandisk Sansa Clip Zip 4B ($40) and add 16GB or 32GB micro-sd memory ($10-$20) and install the Rockbox firmware onto the Clip Zip.

Sony E series are about equal in sound quality to the Clip Zip (but the E's cost more) and the E series have a larger screen and longer battery life, then the Clip Zip, but you can't add memory to the E series.
I use a Sony E465 16GB player myself.
