Already own a Hornet, replace or just get a DAC?

I leave my headphones and headphone amp at work, which is making me question owning a RS Hornet.

I've started to look at some USB DAC/Amp combos, but I'm starting to think I should just get a standalone DAC with USB and coax or optical connections (I use my PC as my source along with an iPod, but can imagine owning a Squeezebox in the future, which has no USB out).

For the money, should I look at something like the Musical Fidelity V-DAC, and run the output into my Hornet, then out to my headphones? Or should I look at the Audio-DG Compass that appears to be very popular?

However, I am also thinking of getting new headphones instead of something like a DAC. I am eyeballing the K701 and Sennheiser HD650. I'm wondering if those would be an upgrade over my HD580s that is better for the money...
