I've been considering throwing an Alien DAC in my next Millet Max build since it would be relatively easy to do and wouldn't require an additional power source. However, I'd rather not go through the time and extra expense if it wouldn't be better than my current setup, which consists of:
Auzen X-Fi Prelude with opa627 op amps and ERS paper on the back of the card
I plan to add a source selector so I would be able to use the analog input (from soundcard) for gaming/movies and the Alien for music. Everything will be enclosed in the same case.
So those that have heard an Alien DAC what do you think? would this be a worthwhile endeavor? If there is another, better DAC that is USB powered and wouldn't cost too much I'm open to other suggestions as well.
