Albums that are physically/mentally/emotionally exhausting, yet highly recommended?

Mahavishnu Orchestra: "Inner Mounting Flame" and "Birds of Fire"
Ronald Shannon Jackson: "Mandance"
Sam Rivers: "Sizzle", "Crystals", "Inspiration" (Rivbea All-Star Orchestra), "Aurora" (Rivbea Orchestra)

I'm sure I can think of a few more that are not mainly jazz, but that could get you started.  I happen to like that kind of music.  Don't forget your Mahler.

Yonlu - A Society in Which No Tear is Shed is Inconceivably Mediocre

Read the story on the album and it becomes very emotionally draining but beautiful.

I like this thread.

I'm not sure if this album can be considered exhausting to listen to but it certainly has a very creepy/paranoid mood to it.

The Residents - Duckstab

I would give examples, but that might influence the replies too much so just reply based on how you understand the question.

Any albums anyone can think of that can be described as very draining and exhausting yet they still consider to be really good?

Stravinsky's The Firebird.  The one by Bernstein and the LSO is favored, but any will do.

Mahler's third.  CSO with Bernard Haitink is my favorite right now, but the PSO's performance of it this weekend with Manfred Honeck promises to be stunning (and thus the CD will be good).
