I want to encode ALAC to low bitrate MP3 to store on my phone. Is iTunes the only way? I'd prefer LAME.

Does iTunes support HE-AAC?

Sorry... I'm a Windows user... I forgot to mention.

The reason I ask is because I believe ALAC is closed source.... so I automatically assumed (hopefully incorrectly) that iTunes is the only method...

Try VLC. I think it can transcode alac to aac or mp3
