Nope, that would be a downgrade.
But why are you using a tube amp with k701s? They need solid state. At least use a hybrid tube amp.
So in conclusion, get a proper amp for the k701s rather than downgrading your phones

Downgrade ? are you kidding?

K701 is a good headphone in it's class , but 990 600ohm is in different class.

i would also assess this to be a downgrade. AKG K701 with proper amplification is something to hear, unless you exclusively want to listen to rap & R'n'B

LOL rap & R'n'B? That's the smallest section of music that I have. The DT990/600 is much better than what you think they are. Unless you've heard them, please don't say they're a downgrade. I am willing to bet that everybody who has owned the dt990/600 has to admit that they are great phones whether or not they enjoy the signature of beyers.

LOL, a properly driven dt990 600ohm is also very much something to behold. I've always been curious about the K701, but some audio expert friends think that they'll probably give me headaches. It's OK for bass to have an impact. It does in real life as well, just as long as the rest of the sound doesn't sacrifice to it.

I have this feeling that they're both pretty darn awesome, just very different. I've had my dt990s since 2007 and have had zero urge to change anything in that setup.

OP, you must be more specific. describe your music taste, what qualities you are looking for. Otherwise, this thread will be full of debates and angry ppl.

Disagree 100%. No, make that 120%. I use a tube amp with my K701's and they sound absolutely awesome.

Yeah, it's like the OP wanted a nice ski vacation, had his car all packed and on the way to the airport, slams on his brakes and decides to go to the beach instead.

And so he pulls over and asks pedestrians: "Would I be happier at the beach or going skiing in the alps?"

The pedestrians need to know things like: Do you enjoy sand everywhere? How do you feel about water? And they have no idea what kind of vacation you have booked to compare it to, or if you can ski and enjoy doing so.

We need to know if you are unhappy with the sound and why. What do you think there should be more or less of? As well as other factors in the setup that would change things.

i just recently sold my K701 for dt990/600ohm. the rest of my rig is in my sig.

K701
-very midrange-centric.
-yes, bass quantity can improve with SS, but so does the upper-midrange peakiness. can be bright at times.
-very airy. people complain about the artificial soundstage, but i quite liked it.

DT990/600ohm
-a more realistic soundstage.
-excellent imagining.
-nice bass impact. i can see where the "neutral" crowd would find it excessive though.
-smooth detailed treble. no upper midrange peakiness or brightness.
-more dynamic sounding.

neither one is "better". music preferences and associated gear are important considerations.

Seconded. Provided it can supply enough power, a tube amp can lend the K702s an excellent tonal warmth. I too, would suggest upgrading your amplifier.
