So all of this -

AKG Revamps Headphone Line

- is pretty much the same stuff with new colours? Sure looks like it by the specs.

As far as we know, yes, it's just cosmetic.

It'll be impossible to say until AKG publishes new service docs - then we'll know, for example, if driver modules have changed or not.

The thing is, even if AKG tells us there's no difference, maybe there is. And maybe there isn't. We've proven for example that there are at least two and probably three versions of the K501, but AKG denies this.

is that really true? i've never noticed a stark difference among pairs.

Well, AKG sure have a problem with literacy...

From the K-240-Mk.-II (why not K-242, as it was demonstrated at the show?) PDF doc:

Frequency range: 1525.000 Hz;

Other than "weird" frequency range, the only other bit of news is "Leatherette ear pads and velvet ear pads". Is there a choice of velvet (velour?) now, or do they just slip that into the box as an additional pair?

This -

2 velour ear pads - Standard on

- seems to suggest velour pads are now part of the standard box set.

The design of the baffle disc changed twice. The number of holes in the baffle and the density of the damping material changed at least once, and some K501's have been photographed as having K500 baffles, which are different from either of the known K501 styles.

See this thread:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/off...-count-227052/

AKG, of course, won't comment on the differences, and swears that all K501 sound alike.

Perhaps they remembered that they already had a K242 in the 80's. It was essentially a late-production sextett that was sold briefly in europe after the introduction of the K240-M (which was based on the K241).

Just like the new Denon Line, although with the AKG's at least you might be able to spot the difference.

Denon "1" revisions have improved isolation, also the diaphragm materials and enclosure acoustic design seem to be a bit different.

Service Docs are out
biggrin.gif

K242HD
K240MK II

Which pretty much confirm that the difference is cosmetic only

The drivers are 2606B00050 for the "new model"
For the old K240 Studio (II) (2004 service doc) The driver are label 2606B0003 with a note: or equally usable variation 2606B0005
EDIT: The old K271 Studio also use 2606B0005.
There is one less zero but they have add zero to all their other part number.
