Thanks to the advice of users in this forum, I purchased the K81DJ as a way to get good sound in an portable, closed phone. I applied the suggested layer of Blue-Tac and removed the inner pad - and the sound is better than I ever hoped; with my 5.5g iPod, there's not a trace of the feared "boominess" some have documented. Another outstanding AKG purchase. An absolute keeper.

The only problem is clamping power. I realize these are "dj" phones, but my ears start to throb after only a few minutes, and my head's not that big. Is there a safe way to make theese slightly more outer-ear friendly?

You can apply a few stretching/bending techniques on the headband, but I myself haven't gotten a great lot of success from this. The other thing you can do is get some velour earpads from Sennheiser for their HD25 model - they fit on to the K81DJ well. They do change the sound signature, however.

I put my MDR-7506 on my PC case, its 8" wide for afew minutes in between games at a LAN party. It reduced the clamping alot.

Dont stretch it. Push the two drivers together as the K81s are counter intuitive. Stretching it will only make it tighter

Why is this? This is really kind of fascinating. What I do notice is that tha memory of the metal is impressive.

Eh no. Stretching helps, and loosens it up. You can stretch it quite a bit without fearing a snap, and it will definitely reduce the clamping factor, I have done it numerous times on mine.

I see absolutely no reason why pushing the drivers together will help with reducing the clamping factor.
