I see you have a HD800S in your signature - I'm guessing that means you didn't get the K812?

I had both the K812 and the HD800 for a while. I thought they were very similar, the most notable difference being exactly where the treble spike was in each, making certain tracks difficult to listen to. Agree with all of above that the HD800 sounded more 'distant'. I ended up keeping the AKG, getting rid of the HD800 and having no regrets.

I had the K-812 and HD-800S (as well as earlier having an HD-800). HD-800S has a lot more sub- and mid-bass than either of the other two, but lacks a bit of the sparkle up top. Bass response in the HD-800 is a bit tighter/cleaner than than the K-812. Both K-812 and HD-800 have treble spikes, for me it was just personal preference as to which type of spice I liked in the treble (the K-812). Have sold all of them now.

I used them for very amateur mixing and mastering at home. I wouldn't recommend either. They're a long way from flat/neutral. I think the HD-800 is the best of the three for that purpose, as it's extraordinarily revealing and you'll likely put in a little extra sub-bass in the mix to compensate for the bass-light FR.

I currently use the 64 Audio U10 with the M15 module - very neutral, feels great for mixing.

Am currently a/b-ing the HD8xx [w/full "sticker mod", Audio Envy ToneKraft cable and Oratory 1990 EQ] and the K812 [w/stock cable and Oratory 1990 EQ] and prefer the overall [tonal, dynamic and rhythmic] balance of the AKG. I also prefer the spatial presentation/realism of the K812.

To my ears the HD8xx sound better paired, running balanced, with the [ss] Violectric V222 [a fuller and more robust presentation overall], but I still give the K812 the edge.
