I am curious if anyone has tried this. I know that AKG K701 like tubes and some power, however I did not want to experiment and blow my drivers. Please advise and thank you for your support on this issue.

I presently have a AKG K340 directly 1/4" phono plugged between the Gloden Tube amp and the headphone input. I am seeking for an answer do I need a step down transformer or load resistors between the amp and the AKG K701.

When I did HD600/HD650 straight out of speaker amp, nothing got fried...so you can technically do K701 too, it can handle more power than the Senns. The key part here is that you have to start with the volume knob at minimum and very slowly test higher volumes. K701's impedance is actually better for the job than K340/HD600/HD650, because k701 has lower impedance (62 ohms vs 400/300/300), somewhat closer to the optimal value for the amp (4/8 ohms).

In short, just be careful. You won't get more volume per turn of a knob than with k340 probably (speaker amplifiers do current rather than voltage at output, so less impedance = less power). Do please drive it in balanced though if you do that (don't have common ground).
