How does the AKG K701 compare to the Sennheiser HD650?

I like an open, airy type of sound, not heavy, syrupy. Does the AKG K701 fit the bill?

And where is a good place online to buy the AKG K701?

Thanks

Not sure about where to buy...

But K701s are definitely the more open/airy variety
It's also brighter

Compared to the K701s, one could certainly describe the HD650s as "heavy, syrupy"

Thanks for the quick reply!

I am thinking about picking up a pair, but just don't know where to look.

Well if you post whereabouts you are, others here may be able to help you with that.

If you search around here there's a thread discussing just this issue.

HeadRoom is a great place to buy them from. They're a little more expensive ($20-30ish) but they have excellent customer service and a 30-day guarantee where you can return them if you don't like them. That guarantee alone is worth the extra in case you just don't like the sound... but be sure to burn in the 701s for a while before making any judgement.

I want to second the wisdom of buying from Headroom. I initially bought 701s from them and liked much about their overall sound signature yet struggled with the brightness and what I experienced as a tendency toward harshness/stridency. Headroom staff and I discussed this back and forth over almost the entire month trial period. They listened to my concerns and never pushed my one way or another. Finally I realized the 701s were just not for me and I returned them and purchased the 650s. No problem. No questions asked. Same friendly policy. They said to listen to them and if I found them to my liking to keep them and if I was not perfectly satisfactory we'd solve the problem some other way. I also have purchased a Headroom amp and dac with the same kind of relationship. There are not many businesses that you can count on this way. And by the way, I have no relationship with Tyll and the gang other than as a respectful and loyal customer. Speech over.

701s are incredibly neutral, transparent and revealing. They demand high quality sources and amplification. The Senns, in contrast, are much more forgiving and less transparent, but very pleasing, in general.

I'm running 701s through a Woo Audio WA6 and could hardly be more pleased.

in general:

701's are bright, airy, and very forward. They sound like you are sitting in the back row, yet everything is still very strong and clear (this 'artificial contrast' prevents me from calling it neutral or transparent it always sounds like this). Gives it the airiness and soundstage. The extreme clarity gives the impression of reference sound. The 701 have very light/thin drivers giving good dynamics and accuracy. However this is also a shortfall because it will sound lean and lack the 650 richness. I think i'll admit that the 701 can go deeper than the 650 though just without the weight and fullness. The 701 IMO doesnt need a crazy amp to sound good. The first thing is high gain because it takes more than the average volume to get sound out of it. Then a more powerful amp will give it a little bit more weight and finesse. I thought the 701 sounded pretty good right out of the Pico.

IMO the 701 is a piercingly bright can when new. Must break in...I've had 2 virgin K701 in 2 months. i got rid of my single ended one after ~400 hours and i just bought another balanced one.

the HD650 is 'naturally' a dark headphone out of the box (colored but correctable might be a good description). It puts you in the frontmost rows (unbalanced) balanced sounds like midrow with larger soundstage, depth, and much more layers than even the 701 balanced. Things sometimes sound really distant and it will detract from the clarity (people call this the 650 veil). It is very rich/heavy/syrupy sounding...so much that it sounds slow and maybe even overflowing into the other frequencies when not amped properly. The 650 is very Smooth, and virtually never harsh on the highs. The 650 is VERY sensitive to component changes. Give it a bright source, silver cabling, and proper amp, the headphones will turn bright. Use the wrong stuff and you can make it sound really bad. Point is with the right components you can get it to sound really really good. MY 701 sounds good, but not as good as my 650...I'll admit the 701 sounded much better before i got the Big amp which is supposedly factory tuned with the 6x0 in mind. The balanced HD600 might be better for you if you dont want to go this crazy.

I just added a K701 to my headphones collection, which also includes the HD650. What I can write after a week of listening is that I should not have bothered. The HD650 can withstand a lot more signal level input compared to the K701, before distortion becomes noticeable. The K701 lacks bass big time. My headphone amp can output 20Vpp, and 5Watts into 8 ohms. So it isn't short of driving ability if required. The K701 did not live up to the advertised claims on deep bass when compared to the HD 650 or any of my other cans. I expected a lot more of it judging by the various recommendations, but I am very disappointed with the outcome.
