The Mini-DAC's headphone jack works very well with lower-impedance headphones, such as Grados, powering them well beyond tolerable levels.

Would the Apogee have enough juice to power the finicky K701's on its own?

What about thru the rear XLR-outs?

I hope to find out soon. I was ready to plug in my balanced K701s into my new-to-me MiniDac only to find out the XLRs in the back are males. Grr! Haven't tried the SE. Will give that a try and report back later.

In terms of simply having enough voltage/current, you are covered there, at least with the internal amp. Whether you like the resultant sound or not is the question. I'm not much of a K701 fan, so my thoughts there aren't worth much.
