i don't have the akg k400 but I do have a pair of akg k401 which I find is superior to the akg k702. I recommend keeping your current headphones or maybe buy another brand. I would bet that a lot of people would prefer the old k4xx or k500xx over the k702 or even the new 65th anniversary edition.
Agreed! I had the K401 and K701 in house at the same time. Always went back to the 401. Eventually sold the 701, but still have my 401's
I know that the 702's are supposed to be slightly better, but when I tried them at a meet I couldn't discern any difference between them and the 701's that I brought. Not the best venue or methodology to really compare though.
I'd also take the K400, K501 or K601 over the K702. Once I got the Q701 though I got rid of the K501.
I now have the K400 and with my Q701 around it rarely gets used.
I also bought some 65th Anniversary memory foam pads. They're a bit weird on both the K400 and Q701, but they actually sound better on the K400.
If you use grill foam the K400 is actually TOO warm with the "Annie" pads. Rather muffled sounding.
I often use my Q701 pads on the K400 but I think there is a chance the K701 pads are a bit different and not as bassy as the Q701/K702 pads. I've never been able to confirm this though.
I just know that some old K701 pads I have suck the bass out of my Q701. Maybe they're just too old. The Q701 pads are much harder and not as soft.
NOTE: I haven't heard the K702 in maybe a couple years. I've had a K701 and K702 many different times.
BTW you'd be surprised at the bass you can get from the K400 when using the Annie pads. At $72 for both it's a waste though unless the K400 is a favorite headphone.
Also, I think the soundstage of the K400 is a bit larger than that of the Q701, but no big deal.
